Shoulder Arthroscopy
Shoulder arthroscopy uses a camera and instruments through incisions of a few millimetres to diagnose and treat pain, stiffness and impingement — without detaching the muscles around the joint.

Fast RecoverySurgical Steps (Overview)
Positioning
Beach-chair or lateral position gives safe access to the joint.
Portal Placement
Small portals allow camera and instrument access from several angles.
Diagnostic Assessment
Labrum, rotator cuff, cartilage and biceps tendon are all inspected.
Targeted Treatment
Impingement is decompressed, inflamed tissue removed, tears repaired.
Closure
Portals are closed and the arm placed in a sling.
Recovery Timeline (Step by Step)
Week 1Sling for comfort · Pendulum exercises · Ice and pain control
Week 2–4Passive and assisted motion · Sling discarded · Desk work
Week 4–8Active motion · Strength work below shoulder height
Month 2–4Overhead strengthening · Return to gym and swimming
Month 4–6Return to overhead and contact sport*The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, and its problems are often a combination of impingement, tendon wear and inflammation. Arthroscopy allows all of them to be addressed in one sitting.
Because the deltoid and rotator cuff are not detached, pain after surgery is far lower than with open approaches and motion returns quickly.
- Persistent shoulder pain despite physiotherapy and injection
- Impingement, bursitis or a calcific deposit
- Suspected labral, cuff or biceps pathology on MRI
- Painful stiffness or a loose body in the joint
- Imaging reviewMRI and X-rays reviewed together so the plan is clear
- Sling arrangedHave your sling fitted before the day of surgery
- Home preparationPrepare loose clothing and a supported sleeping position
- Physiotherapy bookingRehabilitation starts within the first week
In the shoulder, the diagnosis is often layered — impingement on top of tendon wear on top of stiffness. Arthroscopy lets me treat the whole picture through three small portals rather than one big incision.
