Revision Knee الاستبدال

Solving the problem behind a painful implant.

Revision surgery replaces a worn, loose or infected knee implant. It is complex reconstruction: the cause must be identified, bone loss managed and stability rebuilt.

خطوات العملية (نظرة عامة)

1
Cause Investigation

Blood tests, joint aspiration and imaging identify loosening or infection.

2
Implant Removal

Existing components are removed with bone preserved wherever possible.

3
Defect Management

Bone loss is filled with augments, cones or bone graft.

4
إعادة البناء

Revision implants with added constraint restore stability.

5
Balance & Closure

Alignment and soft-tissue balance are verified before closure.

نظرة عامة

A painful replacement always has a reason: loosening, infection, instability, stiffness, wear or malalignment. Revision without a diagnosis rarely helps, so the work-up comes first.

Two-stage surgery is standard when infection is present. In mechanical failure, one operation usually suffices, with revision implants designed to compensate for lost bone and ligament support.

Is a revision knee replacement right for you?
  • Persistent pain or swelling after a knee replacement
  • X-ray evidence of loosening, wear or component failure
  • Instability, giving way or recurrent dislocation
  • Confirmed or suspected implant infection

In revision surgery the diagnosis is the operation. Infection, loosening and instability look alike from the outside and are treated completely differently — so we take the time to know which one we are facing.

Questions & Answers

Why does a knee replacement fail?
Most often through loosening or wear over time, infection, instability, stiffness or malalignment. Occasionally a fracture around the implant is the cause.
Is revision more difficult than the first operation?
Yes. It takes longer, needs specialised implants and bone graft options, and recovery is slower — which is why planning and imaging are so thorough.
Will I need two operations?
If the joint is infected, usually yes: the implant is removed, infection treated with a spacer and antibiotics, and a new implant fitted later.
How good is the outcome?
Most patients gain substantial pain relief and stability, though function is generally a little below a well-functioning first replacement.
How long is the hospital stay?
Typically three to five days, depending on the complexity of the reconstruction and your general health.
ما هي المخاطر؟
Higher than primary surgery: infection, blood loss, fracture, stiffness and blood clots. Each is actively managed before, during and after the operation.
