Bankart Repair
After a dislocation the labrum and capsule are usually torn off the socket rim. A Bankart repair reattaches them arthroscopically, restoring the shoulder’s natural restraint.

Stability RestoredSurgical Steps (Overview)
Assessment
The labral tear, capsule laxity and any bone loss are evaluated.
Glenoid Preparation
The socket rim is prepared to encourage labral healing.
Anchor Placement
Suture anchors are placed along the glenoid rim.
Labral Repair
Labrum and capsule are shifted back and fixed under correct tension.
Stability Test
Range of motion and stability are verified before closure.
Recovery Timeline (Step by Step)
Week 1–3Sling · Pendulum and gentle assisted motion · Pain control
Week 3–6Progressive motion, external rotation limited as prescribed
Week 6–12Full motion · Rotator cuff and scapular strengthening
Month 3–5Sport-specific strength and proprioception work
Month 6–9Return to contact and overhead sport*A first dislocation in a young athlete carries a high risk of recurrence. Each further dislocation damages more cartilage and bone, which is why early stabilisation is often recommended rather than waiting.
Arthroscopic Bankart repair is the standard when bone loss is minimal. Where the socket has significant bone loss, a Latarjet procedure is the more reliable choice.
- Recurrent shoulder dislocation or subluxation
- A Bankart lesion confirmed on MRI or MR arthrogram
- First dislocation in a young contact athlete
- Apprehension and instability limiting sport or work
- Bone loss assessmentCT may be needed to measure glenoid bone loss before deciding
- Sling arrangedA sling is worn for the first three weeks
- Rehab planA staged protocol is agreed to protect external rotation
- Sport timelineWe plan surgery around your season where possible
Every dislocation costs the shoulder something. In a young athlete with recurrent instability, stabilising early protects the cartilage and the bone — and that is what decides how the shoulder looks in twenty years.
