2
Approach

The joint is exposed with attention to the extensor mechanism.

Overview

When arthritis affects the whole joint and daily life is limited by pain, replacement is the most reliable operation in orthopaedics. The aim is a knee that lets you walk, sleep and travel without thinking about it.

Robotic assistance adds precision to bone preparation and ligament balancing. It does not change the implant, but it helps deliver the plan accurately — and accuracy is what patients feel.

Is a total knee replacement right for you?
  • Advanced arthritis across the joint on X-ray
  • Pain at rest or at night, and limited walking distance
  • Stiffness or deformity affecting daily life
  • Injections and physiotherapy no longer helping

Preparing for surgery
  • Medical optimisationBlood tests, dental check, blood pressure and diabetes control
  • PrehabilitationStrength and motion before surgery shorten recovery
  • Home preparationHandrails, raised seating, clear floors, help for two weeks
  • Rehab bookingPhysiotherapy arranged to start in the first week

Knee replacement is not about the implant, it is about alignment, balance and rehabilitation. When those three are right, patients stop counting the weeks and simply get on with their lives.

Questions & Answers

How long does a knee replacement last?
Around nine in ten implants are still working well at fifteen years, and many last considerably longer with sensible activity.
Is robotic surgery better?
It improves the precision of bone cuts and balancing. The clearest benefit is consistency; the plan and surgical judgement still decide the outcome.
How painful is it?
The first two weeks require real pain management, then discomfort declines steadily. Modern protocols make it far more manageable than its reputation suggests.
When can I drive?
Typically three to six weeks for a right knee, sooner for a left knee with an automatic car — once you can brake safely and are off strong medication.
What can I not do afterwards?
Running, jumping and contact sport are discouraged. Walking, cycling, swimming, golf and hiking are all encouraged.
Will I kneel again?
Many patients can kneel comfortably, though some never find it fully comfortable. It is not harmful to the implant.
